Treasure Type Z: Swordmaster Archetype

I really enjoy the Fire Emblem series of games. I have ever since I was a kid and I first played Sacred Stones on the Game Boy Advance.Lucia_Artwork_(FE10)

My favorite class in the games has always been the Swordmaster. I always loved their speed and penchant for critical hits. So, in honor of the new Fire Emblem: Fates, which I’ve been playing for the past couple of weeks, I decided to take a crack at making a Swordmaster martial archetype for the Fighter.

It’s pretty basic, and probably 100% overpowered. But I don’t really care, because I think I captured the magic of the Fire Emblem class. Go ahead, test it out and have a good time.

Swordmaster

Swordmasters are highly-skilled combatants that specialize in unarmored combat and rapid attacks. They wield all manner of swords, eschewing all other types of weaponry.

Requirements

In order to select the Swordmaster martial archetype, you must have access to the Dueling, Great Weapon Fighting, or Tunnel Fighter fighting style.

Unarmored Defense

At 3rd level, as long as you do not wear armor or carry a shield, your Armor Class is equal to 10 + your Dexterity modifier + your Proficiency Bonus.

Vantage

Starting at 3rd level, as long as you remain conscious, you gain advantage on all Initiative checks.

In addition, if you are surprised at the beginning of combat and aren’t incapacitated, you can act normally on your first turn.

Pursuit

At 7th level, when an enemy leaves your threatened area, you may use your reaction to immediately follow them, moving up to your speed. During your next turn, your movement speed is reduced by an amount equal to the movement used for this ability.Joshua_(FE8_Artwork)

Swordfaire

At 10th level, all attacks you make using a sword deal additional damage equal to your Proficiency Bonus.

Killing Edge

At 15th level, when you hit with a sword attack, you can roll 1d6. On a 4, 5, or 6, the attack automatically becomes a critical hit. Once you successfully score a critical hit with this ability, you cannot use it again until you complete a long rest.

Astra

Starting at 18th level, when you use the attack action and hit with all of your attacks, and all of those attacks were made with a sword, you may use your bonus action to make one additional sword attack.

  1. I feel like Astra shouldn’t use a bonus action for it’s extra attack. It using a bonus action makes it non compatible with two weapon fighting and most uses of the great weapon fighter feat.
    I like pursuit and vantage a lot.
    Unarmored defense should probably work off another ability score instead of proficiency to bring it in line with all other class’s unarmored defense abilities.
    Swordflaire is for sure REALLY overpowered 100% but I’m not sure how I’d begin to change that.
    Killing edge on the other side feels really under powered. Since the fighter derives it’s damage from multiple hits doubling the damage dice off a single attack is actually not a large deal. At best you’re looking at a great sword fighter getting an extra 12 damage out it as a once a day 15th level ability.

    Overall I am nitpicking though and I nitpick because I think to much about things I like and i like this class. I look forward to reading what you put out next and sorry effectively ranting about the balance of your class >.>
